Uncle Sam wants you to refinance. President Barack Obama on Thursday urged homeowners to jump at low interest rates and refinance their home loans. But refinancing is not for everyone.

* Mall operator files for bankruptcy protection (Alex Veiga, The Herald)

The nation’s second-largest shopping mall owner, General Growth Properties, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Thursday in a tough bargaining move to restructure its $27 billion in debt.

* Regional housing giant Pulte to buy rival builder, Centex (Jim Wasserman, Sacramento Bee)

In a historic move by two of the capital region’s largest publicly traded home builders, Michigan-based giant Pulte Homes announced Monday it will buy rival Centex Corp., headquartered in Dallas, in a $1.3 billion stock deal.
